Help with Oatmeal !!

Postby Tiolazz » April 11th, 2006, 7:21 pm

Okay, I am a huge oatmeal fan, and I have tried the oatmeal cookies and they are okay, but.....

I want to eat the oatmeal like oatmeal, and I can't seem to get it right. It is either way way too dry and like eating playdough, or way, way too runny and like eating oatmeal soup....

anybody got any suggestions. I really liked instant oatmeal, added my 1/2 cup water into my coffee mug, microwaved for about 1 1/2 minutes, added some ff half & half, (about 1/8cup) and splenda...

I would like to see if anyone has been able to perfect the oatmeal to any where near the consisitancy of regular instant oatmeal. I am really missing that...

Otherwise, I will have to keep baking those cookies, which are good, but I am sure missing my nice hot oatmeal breakfast everyday at work....

Thanks all.....

According to the directions, oatmeal requires 6 oz water/fluid.
I made it for the first time this morning, and it was perfect.

I like mine with 4-5oz of water - It's not too thick, not too thin... it's the Goldilocks version of Medifast Oatmeal for me :) (I prefer my oatmeal to be super thick normally, but not as thick w. the medifast).

I cook it for the exact amount of time prescribed on the MF box, but remember cooking time varies from microwave to microwave!

Good luck :)

I add about 5 oz of water and add extracts, Splenda and sometimes cinnamon. I also will add either butter extract or I can't believe it's not butter spray to it! I cook for 2 minutes in microwave and then I let it sit for about 1-3mins with either a papertowl or the lid to the bowl I'm using to let it thicken up a little...

I don't know what regular oatmeal is like since I hate it, but I use 4-5 ounces of water (5 for the fruit oatmeals, 4 for the maple), plus extra Splenda and cinnamon. Microwave a minute and a half, stir a whole lot, then squirt in a little DaVinci syrup.

I use 8oz of water and cook it for according to intructions and let it sit a few minutes. It was way too thick for me when I used 4 oz.

Im not going to be much help here as I don't measure anything. The oatmeal took me a few times to perfect how I like it., The first time using the directions on the package it was like glue, the second time like soup but now I have it down. I just use the same bowl and"eye" the water, add some cinnamon and cook in the microwave 2 minutes, let it sit in the micro for about 2 minutes. Stir and eat, everyone at work is envious cuz it smells so good!

Did you try Joyce's recipe for baking it in a corning ware dish?? It is listed in the lean cuisine section. Oatmeal 1/3 cup water, 1/8 tsp baking powder, and vanilla, I put mine in about a 6 inch oval corning ware dish and bake at 350 for 15 to 20 minutes. I love that for dinner with some Walden Farms apple butter on it.

Isn't it funny how we all have different recipes and preferences for making and eating the same product?

It used to bug the puckies outta me when we'd have kids over and they'd turn up their noses at something I'd serve and they'd say, "That's not the way MY Mom fixes it!"

I think we're dealing with something similar here. Each of us likes a certain texture and it takes some Mad Scientist experiments to get it just right. When we find that perfect balance of water, it is  heavenly. I am not into library paste; I go for the moister versions.

I agree with you, Robin, the Maple and Brown Sugar seems to work best when 4 or 4.5 ounces of water is used. The apple and peach oatmeal flavors can handle more water because the freeze-dried fruit absorbs more water. I use 7.5-8 ounces of water.

However, the French Vanilla Berry has such a minute amount of berries that it does not absorb much water and it can end up runny. I like to drink the ‘Niller Berry Oatmeal so I purposely make a runny version.

The oatmeal is best when we can prepare it and allow it to sit and thicken up. The flavor develops more and it doesn’t taste ‘raw.’ It tastes great made the night before and tucked into the refrigerator overnight – then merely reheat in the morning for a minute. I especially like the Apple and Peach made overnight.

:goodluck: Good luck! Let us know what you end up with – cookies or in the bowl….

oatmeal

Postby susan77 » April 12th, 2006, 3:56 am

I have found that if I let the oatmeal sit in the microwave after it cooks for a few minutes that it will thicken. Hope this helps. Susan77

I gave up making the oatmeal plain; I've discovered the wonderful muffin recipe and tweaked it! I use lemon extract instead of vanilla for the peach and wow..I feel like I'm in a bakery! :)

hi Tiolazz. I was a little thrown off by the texture of the oatmeal as well, at first. But it grew on me :) Try the different suggestions on this forum and see if they help. I will say tho, I have yet to find a way to get the texture to be like "real" oatmeal. Hope you find what works for you :)

BTW, you really don't want to be adding creamer to the oatmeal, that is added fat and calories.

I just use the amount of water it says on the box, then microwave for a minute and check the consistency after it sits for another minute. If it needs more water, I add more. If it's not thick enough, I microwave for 30 more seconds. Usually since my microwave is high wattage (1100 I think) just one minute is perfect.

Consistency is like real oatmeal to me... I love the stuff. :bib:

I wasn't adding the creamer to the oatmeal, I was using that with my before mf instant oatmeal every day.. lol.....

although I read somewhere on here that we can have a small amount of f/f half and half for our coffee, so if I am not using it for my coffee, could I not use it in my oatmeal??? huh, huh, can I , can I......

LOL

Oh, Nancy, I tried letting the oatmeal sit for a few hours before nuking it and got completely grossed out by it. I wonder if that makes it more like REAL oatmeal. I actually tossed the whole thing after two little tastes because I couldn't stomach it.
