Handling the Halloween munchies

Postby Serendipity » October 25th, 2007, 6:16 am

So, how is everyone going to handle the Halloween candy dilemma?

We get loads of treak-or-treaters, but it varies from year to year. Some years it's 200, other years only 50-75.....sooooo, I need to be prepared even though I may have lots left over. My plan will be to buy candy that does not tempt me......I think I'll choose candy corn or lollypops.....nothing chocolate and most importantly no PB&Choc. Then the leftovers will go to the office and be given out to clients. That's my plan.

I bought coupons from Mc Donalds.... there are cookies, apple dippers, a small drink. If it looks like I am going to have extra I will just start giving more that one to each kid.

My sons were not too happy about me not buying any candy.!

I used to just give out candy that didn't appeal to me (on the rare Halloweens when I was home and not working, that is). Now I don't really worry about it. I'll hand it out that night and just bring the extras in to work the next day.

If I can ignore the candy jar on my desk every day, I can ignore Halloween candy. But it's probably been over a year since I touched the candy on my desk.

I wouldn't want that candy either...

We usually pass out candy, but this year I think we are getting fruit roll ups, pretzels, and stuff like that.

I like the idea of using coupons. Wendy's has some for frosty's, and of course the McD's ones are always popular. If you have a Big Boy in your area they have some for a free kids meal with the purchase of an adult meal. Last time I got them they were something like $1.00 for a 5 pack.

LOL, Mike. But it's all fresh. That jar's been replenished many, many times. Just because I don't eat it doesn't mean it doesn't get eaten. Our TV critic is notorious for coming over as soon as he sees me leave for the day.

We just had a story about healthy treats to hand out - pretty much all non-food treats. But they're all so much pricier than plain old candy. And I know when I was a kid, if I'd gotten stickers or something instead? I'd have felt cheated. Heck, if it wasn't chocolate (especially if it was those AWFUL Mary Janes), I felt cheated.

Isn't that like handing out little heart attacks? With childhood obesity increasing, encouraging children to eat at fast food venues is irresponsible. JMO.

Exactly. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I LOVE handing out candy; it's one of the things I look forward to all year long. I love all the excited little kids. I refuse to be "that house" on the block; I'm not taking all the fun out of my holiday just because I'm on a diet. So I bought the *good stuff* and I just have to be strong. Right this minute there is a stack of bags sitting on my kitchen counter filled with all kinds of my favorite chocolate candy bars, but my morning stop at the scale is what keeps me from a morning (or afternoon or evening) stop at those bags.

Candy corn, candy bars....all that stuff is better than fast food???
It's handing out diabetes AND little heart attacks, isn't it?
Better watch out, Mike ~ those pretzels will cause high blood pressure for the kiddies.

Basically, anyone that's ever handed out treats on Halloween
could be accused of being irresponsible...couldn't they?

On the other hand, we could all hand out girls shoes, like Robin's
childhood neighbors....mary janes?? No, but really ~ what's that?

A lollypop has sugar but not the saturated fats and sodium of fast food. A lollypop isn't going to be in place of a nutritious meal like a fast food coupon. The world isn't the same as when we used to hand out Hershey bars. On Yahoo! every single day in the health section you can read about the epidemic of obesity in all corners of the globe, as if we didn't already have it on personal authority. Isn't that why we're all here? Kids are geting fatter and fatter. So yes, I believe it is more socially responsible to hand out items that don't contribute to the problem. I like the idea of handing out lowfat microwave popcorn. It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. Let change begin with you.

Not my point at all. I thought you had taken a Logic philosophy class! Also sugar doesn't CAUSE diabetes FYI.
