Handling the Halloween munchies

If kids (or anyone, for that matter) only went to fast-food places OCCASIONALLY, or if they ordered the more healthful items that are being added to menus, it wouldn't be as big a problem. Heck, the kids COULD use the coupons for milk and apple slices. What they order is up to the parents, not the person handing out Halloween treats. It's not McDonald's fault our nation is fat; no one makes people eat there, and no one makes them eat there so often.

Anyway, a Mary Jane was some kind of taffy thing. Yellow, red and black wrapper? www dot oldtimecandy dot com/mary-janes.htm

My sister, the one who is getting lap band surgery, sent me a picture of the screen of her lunch calorie counts from the McDonald's website. You tick off what you had and they add it up. She is supposed to be eating lowfat before the surgery because of her fatty liver. Five chicken strips, medium fries, and 2 sweet and sour sauces had 1120 calories. That isn't even a "big meal." I asked her what she thought she was doing and she laughed. It is a type of insanity. Yeah, go ahead and hand out those coupons! Sounds like a great after school snack.

She could go to ANY restaurant and eat a bunch of fried food, too. Or go to Chili's for the "guiltless" chicken platter. With the rice and beans it comes with, she'd be eating about 900 calories - and thinking she was being "good." Or she could have an Awesome Blossom for a mere 2,710 calories. Why blame McDonald's, or even fast food in general?

Those coupons are usually for a free Frosty at Wendy's or a free ice cream cone at McD's. What kind of society are we living in when some of us have the nerve to blame ANY entity for our obesity? Give me a break, I knew what I was eating when I went into a place like that and any parent that has a brain knows what their kids are eating when they get a kid's meal there. No, a happy meal is not a healthy food choice, but neither is any item being sold on the shelves of every grocery store and department store for the purpose of being handed out for Halloween. Setting all of that aside, I would rather my child receive a coupon for a treat at McD's or Wendys that I can decide when and how she gets it then to receive a piece of candy that may or may not be tainted with God knows what freaks are putting in candy these days. The coupon gives the parent control, where candy can be snuck and hidden.

Bought my treats today. Little bags of chips and pretzels and twizlers. I can stay away from those and it's not my responsibility to monitor other people's kids junk food intake. Halloween is what it is.

And, yes, Biki...I am aware that sugar does not CAUSE diabetes...just like coupons for fast food restaurants do not CAUSE childhood obesity and heart attacks.
FYI: one must be presented with logic in order to debate it. ;)

Robin ~ I never saw them packaged as they were on the website you provided (thanks, btw), but I used to LOVE those taffy candies available around Halloween. The ones I remember came in twisted black or orange wax wrappers...and they were peanut butter flavored. :tonguelick: OMG, they were yummy! They were only around this time of the year, though. You were not a PB aficionado as a kid?

P.S. Who wants to take bets on how many "tricks" Unca receives in return for his "treats?"

Sojo, you made an an illogical statement not supported by my statement. All I said is that I thought in the world we live in today there were better options than Mickey D's. You began a syllogism with your statement. Hence, the reason I brought up Logic class.

I never said that. I said that handing out coupons encouraged eating at a place that is very unhealthy and I just considered it ironic that people who are obese or were a short time ago would think it was a good idea to send anyone there.

I never blamed anyone. The reading comprehension level of people on this board astounds me. I realize some people only have time to skim posts, but to then reply with an obvious lack of a grasp of the comments just wastes space. (Not referring to anyone in particular, but if the Croc fits...)And no my sister isn't stupid-so she wouldn't think she was being good. Like many of you, she has been off and on diets since she was 12 and knows calorie counts by heart. Again, all I said is that I thought (I am allowed a thought, right?) it was a bad idea to hand out McDonald's coupons. Are some of you still so enamored of them that you had such a visceral reaction to my comment? Where is all this passion coming from? Don't worry. They'll still keep making Big Macs.

Next time I go back to "visit the wall" of donuts, I will ask. I do know they have cards, like Starbucks that you can recharge.

Wow. You want to talk about passion (and, ummm, defensiveness)? When a discussion about Halloween candy and fast food turns into one person insulting another's "reading comprehension" (and that other person happens to be a professional editor)? Whatever. I'm so done with this. If you want to attack people for handing out treats (whether candy or coupons) on Halloween, so be it. If you want to think it's because we're all so attached to Mickey D's, go ahead (hey, I ate there once in the past three years, so obviously I'm addicted).

I was obese before, yes. But I don't blame the food, and I also don't put ANY foods off-limits now. Eating fries won't make you fat. Eating fries TOO OFTEN will.

And with that, I'm done. All them big wordz is confoosing mee.

I didn't attack anyone. I made a simple comment and it blew up. And god forbid I would question your abilities as a reader but your post about blooming friggin onions had nothing to do with the topic at hand. I said I thought it was irresponsible to distribute McDonald's coupons to youth. Fini. My sister's meal was an example I posted because she had emailed it to me. So sorry I offended you-please don't threaten to leave!

Once again no one is allowed to disagree with someone or something on this board without it causing an uproar. We all have to live in Candyland where everyone is right and every one is pretty and one little slip won't hurt and we all have to agree. Everything must be taken to extremes and everyone gets so emotional if there is a chink in the facade. It makes me feel juvenile and I doubt I am the only one.
