Hamburgers

Postby BoPeep1 » May 12th, 2006, 6:48 am

I'm kind of confused about eating hamburgers.

My L&G meals have basically been vegetarian, with maybe some chicken if I go out to a restaurant. So, I went out and bought some pre-made hamburgers to get some actual meat into my body. I put it on my little George Foreman grill, and then looked at the box and saw 26g of fat!!!!

Does some of this fat come out when I cook it, or am I doomed to have fatty burgers? I ended up giving my burger to by hubby becuase I did not want to put that much fat into my system. Am I missing something here, do burgers with a leaner content have a drastically less percentage of fat?

premade patties have a lot of fat in them. You would probably be better buying lean chuck and making your own or getting premade turkey burgers. I like the premade turkey burgers actually. They have spices in them and are pretty tasty. I should get some now that I mention it! :)

I have learned something in my twelve weeks on plan. Pre-made =Lots of fat, extra"stuff" (sugars, sodium) and generally, not very cohesive to this plan.

Morning Star burgers or Boca Burgers being the exception of course. I don't now what the percentage of fat is in the hamburger I buy I just buy the fresh leanest burger I can find although I did read an article the other day which shows that ground sirloin is WAYY less fatty then your leanest, lean ground beef. The article suggested even to pick out some sirloin steaks and have the butcher grind them up while you shopped. (If I find this article later today, I will post it)

I eat a lot of Shrimp, fish(tilapia), occasionally pork loin, lean beef, chicken and I also sometimes have either tuna in water or 2 boiled eggs for my lean.

Lots of choices.:)

Hugs,
Gina

Shrimp is great, tons of protein and almost no fat but it has VERY HIGH cholesterol, be careful.

Gina that's a great idea! I do enjoy a nice hamburger every once in a while, so I'd be more than happy to pay the extra money and have it nice and lean.

Hi there,
I buy the 93% lean hamburger and make my burgers out of that. They can be a bit dry so I always have a bit of ketchup with them, onion and couple slices of pickle. You can also put them between two big lettuce leaves and have a "sandwich"

I buy the 97% lean beef. Jan is right, it is kind of dry. That is because it has practically no fat. But, I just add a few dashes of soy sauce, some onion powder and garlic powder and some Uncle Chris's Gourmet Steak Seasoning (the brand is Fiesta). I patty it up, and my hubby grills them outside. Inside, I sautee mushrooms, onions fresh garlic and some seasonings in a little soy sauce and I use about 5 sprays I can't believe it's not butter (I know that sounds like a lot, but I cook a lot of mushrooms and onions--the family loves them). I serve it all atop a big slice of grilled cabbage, or sometimes a side salad. YUMMY.

I don't have time to type up the whole article but:

Ground Beef(70% Lean, 1 OZ)
Calories 93
Fat 8.4g
Sat Fat 3.2 g
Sodium 19mg
Carb 0g
Fiber 0 g
Protein 4 g

Extra Lean Ground Sirloin(3 OZ)
Calories 98
Fat 3.4 g
Sat Fat 1.1g
Sodium 56 mg

Protein 16.5 g

pretty significant difference. Happy Munching!

You should try Buffalo burgers also. I buy buffalo meat at my local butcher shop. It is 3% fat, very lean, and very very tasty. doesn't seem to be as dry as the extra lean ground beef either... Plus it is suppose to have higher nutrient values as well. You can check it out online...

it is a little higher than ground beef, but I am telling you, the flavor is wonderful.

Hi, I agree with Gina, ground sirloin is the leanest beef you can find. It has a great taste, also. But, just like the 93% lean beef, it should be watched closely when cooking it, because it can easily dry out or turn into a hockey puck! I prefer the sirloin as a healthier choice for me, personally.

I thought about having some beef just to have something different but it was just too high in calories and fat for me. I'll stick with my Boca burgers that only have between 60 and 90 calories and between 1 and 3 grams of fat depending on which ones I get.

I used to make meatloaf as a kid (yeah I was a little chef. My mom had a love/hate relationship with it because of the mess I would make), and I didn't like adding eggs or breadcrumbs to my loaf so I would make it sticky with bbq sauce and ketchup. Mixing it in the hamburger always made the hamburger very juicy despite the fact that it was lean and nearly all of fat baked out of it during cooking. Since we are allowed a certain amount of condiments with our L&G maybe try adding a small amount (of whichever) to the hamburger before you patty it up and see if that makes it juicier for you.

Sarya,

Adding condiments that we are allowed sounds like a great idea to keep the burger moist. I love your idea! :D I, too, use Boca Burgers most of the time, but I recently bought some ground sirloin patties, and I am hoping that cooking them on the Foreman, will drain away most of any fat that might be in the very lean burgers.
When I posted before, I didn't mention ground round, as a good low fat ground beef, along with the sirloin. I prefer sirloin, but that is only personal choice.

When I finally get around to cooking up the lean ground beef in the Foreman, I am hoping that it is not too dry, or it's remnants will be in the grill for eternity! Just kidding! Good luck with your recipe, Sarya, and thanks again for the idea!
