My hair is falling out...

Postby FluffyNoMore » July 13th, 2006, 4:40 pm

I don't know if I should be concerned if it's just a phase and will grow back or if it's going to continue....

It's not just a few more hairs falling out, it's ALOT. So much so that I'm starting to get really thin almost bare spots. I usually have thick thick hair...I'm a little concerned. I wake up with my pillow covered in hair.. I have to clean my brush every time I use it, I can't ever run my hands through my hair without getting a handful of hair. My dh who notices NOTHING said something about my hairloss... of course he's concerned also.

I really don't want to be bald. :) Does anyone have any advice?

Go to your doctor or a dermatologist ASAP. It could be a simple hormonal imbalance, or it could be much more.

This is a commen side affect with Medifast.

Side Effects
One to two tablespoons of canola or olive oil can be incorporated into the 5&1 Plan to help with constipation, hair loss, and dry skin.

HAIR LOSS?
A small percentage of people on the program will struggle with hair loss, especially those on the program for more than three months. B vitamins, zinc, and Biotin are all helpful for decreasing the problem, as are more natural alternatives such as primrose oil and flax seed oil. Hair loss is not
permanent and re-growth typically occurs within a couple months of going off the 5 & 1 program.

This was taken from the FAQ section.

Although I respect Laura's response and have seen that in the FAQ, I would still go to the doctor. If you are in fact losing large quantities of hair to the point that you are seeing balding spots, I would still seek the advice of a doctor. You just can't be too careful.

Dede, how long have you been taking the other vitamin supplements? Have you noticed any difference yet? I want to be thinner, but I also don't want to have bald spots. LOL!

Di takes a supplement that has like a million grams of biotin in it. It come in a little pink box in the pharmacy section of the grocery store... something hair and nails I think. Lots of Biotin... seems to help.

Jen,
I've been doing it for just over a week. They said this happens sometimes to people on the plan for more than 4 months and I'm at 4 1/2 right now!

I'm taking flax, olive oil and the hair/skin/nails formula with a boatload of biotin. I'm fighting this like crazy!

i started flaxseed oil caps a couple of weeks ago because hairloss is extremely common with weightloss in general-- with a program like mf is it more likely than not. check with your md. he/she will probably run a panel, make sure everything is ok, and then give you options for organic treatment. it will grow back if it is just due to your diet.... but it's a cool idea to have the blood work done anyway to make sure everything is continuing to function correctly with such a dramatic change in calorie intake.

my hair, even with the flaxseed sup has begun to fall out. it is something i have decided i have to deal with in order to get to my destination. if it gets really bad, i'll just shave my damn head. :-P ok, that would suck. i'm just saying hat it does happen; it will come back.

Yikes, I keep hoping this won't happen to me, but you know... I'll wear a wig if I must. Maybe I should start those supplements early just to be careful.

My hair fell out by the handfuls 5 1/2 months into my plan and 15 lbs. from goal last time I was on MF three years ago. I was already taking three large gelcaps of Total EFA (flax, borage, and fish oil). I was told to have 1000 mg. of biotin, which is what I do now to avoid hair-loss again. If you do a search on this forum there are several good threads about it. I wish I hadn't stopped MF when my hair was falling out, though.....it grew back. But it messed me up mentally....I wasn't ready to quit and I wasn't ready for maintenance, and I gained back the 63 1/2 lbs. I lost. My hair is really thick too, but I panicked when I'd lost about a 1/3 of it. I was also on the full-fast and I think that might have had something to do with it. I read of many others who've had hair-loss on MF, but kept going with their weight-loss. It WILL grow back.
