I know - it's a bummer. I've always liked the taste of imitation crab meat, but it's been a no-no all the way back to my Atkins days. In addition to being seriously over-processed, they add sugar to give it that sweet crab taste. What size serving do they list on the package? According to an Alaska Seafood site (one that sells imitation crab meat), a 7 oz serving would have:
204 calories
24g protien
2.6g fat
20.4g carb
1682mg sodium
While a 7 oz serving of real dungeness crab would have:
219 calories
44g protien
2.5g fat
1.9g carb
749mg sodium
Since we're getting so few calories on Medifast, we need to make sure every calorie is a good one. There's no room for "junk calories." I'm not calling imitation crab junk, but for our purposes, its 20 grams of carbs, 24 grams of protien, and almost 1700 milligrams of sodium aren't worth the 204 calories we'd have to spend to eat it. When we eat our L&G, our L needs to be giving us primarily protien to balance out the carbs we're getting in our G.
But don't be discouraged! This is a learning process, and we're all here to help each other out. That imitation crab will still be there (in moderation) after we've reached our goal! In the meantime, maybe on a Friday after you've had a really successful on-plan week, treat yourself to some honest-to-goodness crab (King crab . . . mmmmm . . .). Tastes great, less filling!
