Getting kicked out of Ketosis

Postby MISSANNE » October 18th, 2006, 11:10 am

I read alot about people here who go off plan with one meal or day by accident or on purpose. I am guilty myself.

This is my question:

If I'm on plan and I eat something (such as a burrito) 1 night does it take another 3 days to get back into ketosis and lose weight? Or will it just be added calories and carbs so you wont lose for another day or so?

I actually did this myself. I've been on plan, faithfully, finally. Then last night after Softball everyone went to Filibertos (mexican food) to get something to eat. This was at like 11:30pm. I only went because my kids were hungry and wanted to hang with their cousins more. I gave in and ate a burrito. I had all my supplements yesterday and started w/ a shake again this morning.

Have I set myself back for 3 more days?

everyone is different. i think most people get back in after 2 days.
i had to lower my carbs, because i was definitely not staying in ketosis with anything above 75 per day. it took me about 48 hours....

So it could be down to hours as opposed to 3 days. I'm thinking i wont lose anything and I'm screwed until 3 more days have passed again.

I don't think it's so much not losing anything in those days after, it's more that you will have a harder time sticking to it for a few days.

Also, it takes an hour to trigger the insulin response. If you DO consume excess carbs, it's recommended (by Atkins and some others) to do it within an hour rather than eating carbs all day. That will minimize the effect on your blood sugar and insulin levels, which will also reduce the cravings.
