Turnips

Postby Jan » May 1st, 2006, 7:15 am

Ok,
I'm heading off to the grocery store and of allllll things there are going to be some turnips in my cart. Maybe that old cat who refused to eat them didn't know much after all.

They are great with some Garlic Pepper and Garlic Salt - my convection oven crisped them right up but you can turn on the broiler for a minute if you don't have a convection oven.

Chiming in yet again on the turnip thread.

Postby Ginabobina1969 » May 12th, 2006, 5:55 am

I just had these again Last night..Loveee them! I do sprinkle salt, pepper(lots), and oddly enough chili powder along with a verrrry light sprinkle of season all(which I am gonna leave out next time)

Anyway, I never had a turnip in my LIFE until I tried these and had relegated them to the mental "pile of untouchable veggies" I have been missing out and you are too if you haven't tried these yet.

Yum!

Gina, I'm thinking of a way to drive home for lunch, only to try these :D

But guess I'll have to wait for dinner!!!!

I think I'll try that with seasoned salt, pepper (lots), and I'll add chili powder like you told me!

I think it might be good to add some cajun spices too!!

CAN-------NOT WAIT!!!!

Ok, so what turned out to be the best way to cook them...temperature and timewise?

I tried them with olive oil spray and fresh rosemary, omg, they were awesome, almost like my mother in law's roasted potatoes.....

They weren't really crispy, but who cares, they were great....

gotta try these if you haven't....

I say 35-40 minutes at 400 degrees - that did it for me!

I made these last night. They were really good. I turned the broiler on for the last 5 minutes and they were crispy. Tasted like sweet potato fries!
Yummy!
I'm going to make the "mock" potato(cauliflower) salad this weekend.

Good, and since I like them crispy, I think I'll do:

40 mins at 400 degreed
5-10 mins at broil! BURN!!

Or maybe I should fry the turnip in oil?

Oh my god!!

This was just sooooo good, I felt guilty. Yes, guilty about eating turnips!!!!

To make them crispy though I had to put them 1 hour and a half at 400 degrees, than 10 min on broil, but they were excelllent!!!

I don't know if you guys know what putine is, but it's ou national meal here. It consists of french fries with cheese and a big fat gravy sauce.

I tried to simulate a poutine with fake french fries, extra-firm tofu and I made a sauce with this (I think it's a maintenance sauce, sorry):

- 1 tbsp corn starch (25 cal, 7g carbs)
- 1 tsbp lo-carb ketchup (5 cal, 1g carb)
- Beef broth (Dunno the specs of that one)
- 1 cup of water

The sauce thickened with the corn starch, it got a nice taste and I really enjoyed the light poutine, which is usually one of the fattest food available on the planet!
