Exercise Problem

Postby Arklahoma » October 1st, 2006, 3:09 pm

I have a 4 mile path that I've been walking and I would like to know what my speed is, but I can't figure it out. Yesterday, I walked my 4 miles in 46 minutes so I set up a ration/proportion problem like ...

4 miles / 60 minutes = x miles / 46 minutes

but the answer I got was like 3. I know that if I walk the path in 1 hour then I'm doing 4 mph but what about 46 minutes. Can anyone clarify??? I know we've got some teachers out there

Are you sure it's 4 miles? Is it even possible to go that fast and still be walking?

I'm positive the path is 4 miles b/c I drove my car and checked the tripometer; however, this actually might make sense b/c I've been interval walking/jogging and can't seem to shave any more time off no matter how hard I try.

Jenn ~ can you find out HOW to work the problem. I'm becoming obsessed with tracking my performance and would like to know how to figure it out.

Pet sitter here, but I used to be a computer programmer. You were so close. Setting up a ratio was correct, ya just put some nos. in the wrong place. So you did 4 miles in 46 minutes and want to know what your mph was, or how many miles you would have walked in 60 minutes. So you do 4/46 = x/60. Solve for x, ya get 46x = 240, or x = 5.217 or 5.22, like someone's mech. eng. DH said. Hope this helps.
