Diet drinks - Read before taking another drink

This is an interesting site about the negative effects of Aspartame, which is the sweetner in drinks such as Diet Coke.

Drink at your own risk!

If you still wish to drink Diet Coke after looking at this site, I would be glad to buy you a case!

I drink very little Diet Coke, but one guy's opinion on aspartame sure wouldn't dissuade me from consuming it. There are reputable studies on both sides.

Heck, I'd support bringing back cyclamates, personally. And saccharine.

I understand your point but it is better to error on the side of caution. There is a lot out there about the dangers of Aspartame.

Personally, I stilldrink diet coke on occassion, just not as much as i used to.

Well, heck, if you're going to err on the side of caution, I wouldn't eat almost anything. No aspirin, pretty much no other medication. No soy, which has positives and negatives. No meat, which has positives and negatives. No wheat, no sweeteners, no additives of any kind. There's always someone - and some study - saying something is unhealthy. And the science is always changing. You could make yourself crazy.

IMHO, just about any food/drink is OK in moderation.

I rarely drink Diet Coke anymore, but it's more because of the caffeine and because I'm too busy drinking water.

I apologize if I offended you at all. You do make some good points. You are right that most things are okay in moderation. I used to drink tons of diet coke, but only seem to drink it when I eat out anymore.

Nah, it takes a LOT more than that to offend me. :)

It's just the journalist in me. I argue when WE run stories like that, too.

I enjoy a diet Dr. Pepper at least once a day. My rule of thumb is I have to get in 4 glasses of water before I can have a soda, usually in the afternoon with my bar. It's something I look forward to, and I can't imagine cutting it out entirely.

When I consume more than 2 or 3 diet sodas a day sweetened with aspartame I get a headache. I cannot eat diet jello. It must be super concentrated or something. I do not get headaches from drinking splenda sweetened drinks. The fact that I get a headache tells me that the stuff is not good and probably toxic, I dont' even have to read an article for this opinion.

just to chime in on the ole artificial sweetner debate... the history of aspartame itself is quite entertaining. Our loveable "Secretary of Defense" Rumsfed was instrumental in getting it to market. This was when he was Chairman of Searle. I won't waste space writing on the whole debacle, but I highly recommend reading up on the history of the BLUE sweetener. Our beloved YELLOW sweetner is just as controversial. Just google "splenda +toxicity". We all want low cal options for sweetening our food, but non-natural substances are a crapshoot in my humble opinion. But then again, what isn't in this world anymore?

If you go out to any of the urban legend sites (snopes, about, etc) and pull up info on aspartame, you get get additional information that covers this subject. I didn't read the website as the link was gone before I got here.... but really, so many of these things are not true. Obviously, you have to be the judge..... but I'd take that case of diet coke (well I prefer pepsi!) because I choose to believe the medical community rather than someone I don't know on the web.
