Chinese?

Postby veritas » March 16th, 2006, 8:40 am

[color=darkred]The other day I had a luncheon at a chinese resteraunt and had no idea what would work for my lean and green meal. :? I got shrimp with vegetables and gave away my rice and egg soup. Did I fail? Is chinese just not doable? I will avoid these situations in the future but this was prearranged before my MF start. NO MORE COMPROMISE!!!

Hey, Veritas-

I eat Chinese food as my L&G at least 4-5 days a week. I just get steamed chicken with mixed vegetables. It all comes steamed, 100% clean, nothing added. Just make sure they don't include carrots. I usually ask for broccoli, string bean, bok choy and spinach, and then get either chicken or tofu or both (little of each). Watch your portions, but have fun!

I happen to love the flavor alone, but if you are dying for some sauce, just put some low sodium soy on, and bon appetite! I ask for them to not give me rice or anything else - what's not there won't tempt me.

Healthiest meal in the book, and it's pretty much gotten me through the last 18 weeks!

You did great, don't stress out, you can pretty much find a grilled or steamed chicken and vegetables anywhere you go!

Thanks for the tips! Whew! That means I didn't mess up too bad. I will ask for steamed next time I go. This diet just keeps getting better and better!

There is a restaurant here that has Mongolian BBQ. You get to just go through part of the buffet and choose uncooked meat and veggies then take it to the chef who cooks it for you on a giant grill. He adds garlic and a soy type sauce and asks you how hot you want it. He adds a little or alot of a red pepper sauce. IT IS SO GOOD!!! And, it is L & G. My favorite....

Thanks for that tip! There is a place a lot of my cowokers like to go that has the Mongolian bar and I always forget about it when they ask me to go. Now I can go next time I do love it, fresh crisp veggies and you can have the variety of meat. Just will have to close my eyes as I walk past the little fried triangles with cheese filling.... ahhh well they will be there in maintance.

Hey, guys-

Totally don't want to be a buzzkill here, but be careful with the Mongolian and Korean BBQ and others like that. While your choice of meat may be perfect along the lines of L&G, you often grill at the table with friends, or the restaurant grills all the folks' choices on the same grill, using oils and sauces and such. Not telling you that it can't work, just be aware of the fact that you don't have as much control over the "extras" that may be finding their way into your meal.

On the other hand, I have been to Korean bbq where you just place your meat on a stick and hold it over a flame - obviously that would be fine! I just don't want everyone to run out and eat this, without considering the situation...

But, enjoy, regardless of what you choose!

See that is exactly my fear about eating out. You never really know what is actually in the food or what it is cooked with. I have seen too many of my friends, and myself, fail on a diet because we consume hidden calories and then get discouraged because we are not losing weight. I am starting to think that I don't want to eat out anymore, but it is almost impossible with my lifestyle. Well I guess I can't go wrong with chicken and broccoli, or can I? I think that I will just throw in some extra excercising on the days that I eat out just to be safe.

When I eat out I specifically ask that my food not be cooked in oil or butter or seasoned with anything that has sugar in it and I always aske for my veggies either steamed or grilled again with no butter or oil. They have always been really accomidating. You are paying THEM to serve you so you should feel free to order anyway you want

Yeah, Veritas, I agree with Lisa. You can and should ask the staff at a restaurant to accomodate you, and they usually will. The same way a person who's allergic to peanuts would reinforce that nothing with peanut be served to them, is how you can be particular about your diet.

If you have any concerns at all about "extra" ingredients, ask for everything steamed, all sauces on the side. They can not sneak ingredients into steamed bc the definition of steamed is that it is just cooked over water. That's it. Grilled is usually safe, but grilled also usually contains oil for grilling. A little oil is not a problem, so you can say to the waiter that you'd like Grilled Chicken (or any fish or shrimp) with a side of steamed vegetables, no rice, no potato, etc. Be sure to reiterate that you do not want any sauce on the chicken.

Most important, Veritas, is that you don't deprive yourself of the events in life that you enjoy. I have found this diet most successful because I've incorporated it into my life, I've made it work for me, so I don't feel like I've had to change everything. The reason this is important is because it can work for a long time, it's not something that is like a crash diet that I can't wait to be done with. Make plans with friends, family, whoever, go out to lunch or dinner, anything fun. Be creative, and don't be scared to try new things. Make it work, and it will work for you!

Thanks for all the tips. I guess I just need to be a little more demanding when I go out. I am always the type to just eat it even if it wasn't what I ordered cause I don't want to fuss. But I have a goal to reach and I won't let anything get in the way! Thanks for the push. :D

I've never been too demanding at restaurants before, either, but I've learned to ask for what I want. I'm sure they'd rather customers do that than stay home and not give them any business. And it's not like we're usually asking for anything complicated.

This has been an excellent thread to stumble upon. Thanks, compadres. The real world is full of challenges!!

Like Dogma, I've had to learn to stick up for my body. It started with MSG (amazing where that stuff sneaks in). Fortunately, when I don't take care of myself by asking for what I need, my husband will do it for me, regardless of my embarrassment (but I'm learning not to get embarrassed and ask myself).

Here's to our mutual success!!
