Chili question

Postby sidrah » January 22nd, 2006, 5:04 pm

Does anyone make it and get a good priduct out of it. 3 times now I have tried adn get brown soup with beans floating. It NEVER looks like the picture on the box. It doesn't even look like mushed up solid food, just liquid with some thigns floating in it.

I put in the 4 oz. of water and the mix. I normally add in extra water to make it more substantial, but for this I kept the water to a minumum and still....

Any suggestions :?:

Maybe I can help.....

Oh, I love the chili! Here is what I do....first of all, I have not tried microwaving it, I do it in a 1 qt saucepan on the stovetop. I do 2 packs at once, so it is worth my time to dirty the pot and all, plus it is half the work ;) I put in 2 packets, 8 ozs water, and I heat it to a boil. At the very beginning, I add some chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder....I wing it and dash in what looks right. Once I get it to a light boil, I turn it down to low and let it cook until it is thicker. I stir every couple of minutes and then when I think it is about right, I take it off the burner and let it thicken more in the pot. I divide it out into little 4 oz containers with lids ;) It is awesome reheated and it only takes it one minute to reheat. I do my oatmeal the same way and I absolutely love it also.....and it is good reheated too! Hope this helps!

:D

Definitely helps. I will try it on the stove. I have a double pack sitting in the fridge now with a cup of water added in. Maybe, I will just re-heat it tomorrow and add in the flavors. I add some salsa in, so maybe this time it will be more chili-like and not salsa floaters in chili water.

Thanks

Another trick is to "soak" it for a while before cooking it. Use the 4oz of water, (cold water) mix in the MF chili packet, and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours. Then nuke or stovetop (I recommend stovetop) until it is the temp you prefer.

I also add a blob of salsa to mine and usually add a tiny bit of extra water when I add a spoonful of salsa...and it is one of my personal favorites....

I make it like Sheila does, and it comes out pretty good (sometimes I add some hot sauce in addition to salsa; the ones soaking in my fridge right now have some cumin added as an experiment). And then I crumble a packet of crackers into it. It's one of my favorites, too.

Thanks for the idea. I think I have to buy some of those crackers I have the soup soaking in the fridge, so I will see how it all works out when I get home tomorrow night.
