I Can See!!

Postby mellowmom » June 2nd, 2006, 5:45 pm

Hi!

Well, it's been 9 hours since the "procedure" and I feel great. It's amazing to be able to see distance and the tv without having glasses on, as well as being able to see the computer screen and read, again with no glasses. I keep reaching to push my glasses up my nose (they were always sliding down) and then I realize there is nothing to push!

The procedure itself took maybe a total of 15 minutes for both eyes. As soon as I got to the OR and took a look at the operating table I said a silent prayer of thanks that I had lost the 50 pounds. The table was narrow and straight out flat. As I lay there, I thought of how a couple of months ago I probably would have had problems breathing lying on a table this way.

Just a slight bit of discomfort when they positioned each eye. Felt like they were pushing each eyeball into the back of my skull! But that only lasted 30 seconds, maybe less. They work on each eye separately. The eye that is not being worked on is covered with a patch. Aside from the "pressure" when they positioned each eye, didn't feel anything else.

However, there was one slightly uncomfortable experience, not painful, just kind of disturbing. When the laser is pounding away on your cornea you can hear this clicking accompanied with the smell of something burning! I meant to ask the doctor what that smell was...but I think I was kind of afraid to find out. (Oh nothing, dear, it's just that your eye is on fire!)

After they were done, the doctor gave me a packet of antibiotic and anti-inflamatory drops and some dark glasses along with the caveat to try and keep my eyes closed for at least the next four hours.

The first 3 1/2 hours at home my eyes teared constantly.

So I really couldn't tell how much eyes had improved. It was like trying to see underwater! After the four hours, they started to dry out. and now they seem fine.

Will go back tomorrow for a re-check. I think it all went well. The literature they give you after the procedure says that it will be at least 24 hours before you get a really good idea of what your eyesight is truly like, and as much as 3 months before it totally heals. I'll keep you posted as the time goes by.

Thank you all for your prayers and best wishes.

I had the exact same reaction when I had my eye lasered. I thought it was the smell of my eyeball burning away and it was all I could do not to flip out on the table. I asked the doctor afterward, and he said it was the smell of ozone created by the laser ionizing the air. So nothing to worry about. :D

I'm glad it went well :) I want to do that sometime as well, but really the thought of the process freaks me out a little bit.

Congrats Mellowmom! Does it feel great? I had mine done a little over a year ago and loving it everyday.. :D
The smell bothers me a little, i was warned before I got in there, I just couldn't look at the screen while other have their procedure done, my boyfriend thought it was very insteresting, so he kept trying to discribe them to me, and I was like :puke: and pray that I get to be the first one to go in and I did. :D

That was my theory too...Be the first one in and get it over with and not be regaled with "horror" stories in the waiting room.

Did your sight change much after the first 24 hours? The literature I received from the doctor said that there could be changes up to 3 months after the operation.

Well, I have to go in for a second proceduce after about 2 weeks, because my left eye didn't inprove much and I was told it because of an air bubble :scratchhead: The second produceduce were for them to cut the cornea and relese the air... And this proceduce bothers me a lot more because I can feel them scratched my eyeball back and forward to smooth out the cornea :eyecrazy: The next day I was able to see clearly...I mean CLEARLY. And the cornea will takes about 6 weeks to heal, just make sure you put lots and lots of eye drop.

Carmel ~ I'm so glad to hear that things have gone well so far. I want to do this but I am such a chicken and don't know if I could. I've been wanting to have laser hair removal done and still haven't even gone in for the initial consultation. Maybe soon.
