Calling All Fitness Gurus and Gym Rats-HELP!!!!!

Postby bikipatra » December 27th, 2007, 9:02 am

I needed a piece of equipment to work my core and abs and this equipment was recommended for that. Slight problem. I have no idea how to use it and what exercises to do on it. I don't even know what the chick in the picture is doing. The description doesn't say whether it comes with an instruction manual. It hasn't shipped yet but I do want to know what to do on it. I am primarily interested in ab toning but know how important whole core exercises are. Thanks for your help in advance. If you think it is a bad piece of equipment tell me that too.

Looks kinda like an incline weight bench to me. I don't know what that woman is supposed to be doing, but it doesn't look like a very safe move.

Oh, Robin, I was sure you were going to be my fitness instructor in shining armor. It is called an ab board and hyperextension board. I keep googling to try to find exercises to do on it, but no luck. Maybe it will come with a manual.

Maybe this will help:(I really don't understand any of it!)
Take your daily core workout and turn it up a few degrees with the Best Fitness BFHYP10 total core trainer. Fusing two of the most popular core workouts--ab crunches and back hyper-extensions--the trainer keeps your most important core muscles strong and tight. The BFHYP10 is outfitted with a six-position hyper-extension support that lets you work comfortably from a standing or angled position, along with a three-position lower leg support. Together, the supports help you build the abdominal muscles that are crucial to maintaining lumbar spine strength and fortify the back muscles to create a healthy and pain-free lower back. The stronger both sets of muscles are, the more support and stability they provide.
The Best Fitness total core trainer lets you vary the starting position of your workouts between 15, 20, and 25 degrees, letting you design the most effective core workout for your situation. The simple pull of a pin makes it possible to control the angle of the bench to increase or decrease the intensity of each session. Other details include 6- and 4-inch high-density foam roller pads; 1.75-inch upholstered bench pads; and rubber-gripped positioning handles. Requiring minimal assembly, the core trainer measures 29 by 32 by 49.5 inches (W x H x D) and carries a three-year warranty.

I dunno about the standing part. The hyperextended part would be like doing crunches and stuff on a ball. You lie on the board with your head pointing down, and do crunches or sit-ups from there (the roller things would anchor your feet/legs).

hey biki, i asked my mom about it. i figured she would know. I described the thing to her and the lady's position, she said the following:

The woman will lean down (to her left) and lift herself back up to the straight line (maybe even a little further to her right) thus crunching her obliques. There are a few other positions, the normal "crunch/situp" position where your legs will go over the top bar...a position where you will lean over the top bar (your face will be towards the bench), your legs will be hooked under the bottom and you will lean forward and lift back up, working your back muscles. She doesn't recommend it because it is easy to injure yourself (esp. your back) if the exercises are not done properly. If your core is already unstable, it makes everything that much easier to injure. I asked what piece of equipment she recommends. She simply stated "NONE"! She recommended pilates, the plank, and properly done crunches of all types. She also said that if she had to recommend ANY piece of equipment at all for abs it would be the stability ball. Primarily because it rarely causes injury and would provide the leverage to do almost all of the exercises that your ab board will allow. She said the ball will give overall core conditioning. She also recommends stability ball dvds by Patric Goudeau. I have actually tried his ABC ball workout and it REALLY is a workout but also very fun. Bouncing on the ball and stuff, you only realize you are working out (and not on a playground) because you are out of breath and sweating. Hope this helps.

Even though it won't ship until an estimated date of January 6, Amazon says my order is in process and can't be cancelled. I guess I will see if it comes with a manual and if I can do exercises that feel safe and if not just return it. The possible back injury part worries me because I was in weeks of physical therapy for my back several months ago and have been pain free. Thanks for the help Erica! Please thank your mom for me.

Did you get your equipment? The excersises that you will do with this will strenghten your "core" the moves need to be done with care as to keep your back aligned and never overdo! a little goes a long ways. The Ball is a good peice of equipment as you can build your core muscles well with a great option of different moves! I use a similar peice of equipment at the gym and it is a good workout! I have the Ball at home and it is nice to have there as well.( My daughter likes to do "exercises" with it too! :D

Yes, I have the equipment and do several exercises on it but mostly crunches. I called the company and they directed me to a webpage with exercises. Thanks!

I hate using a stability ball, personally, although it may be that mine just isn't very good. I'm going to get a better one at some point. Maybe. If I think it'll help with my PUSH workouts.

My personal trainer at the gym had me use one and I am feeling more sore muscles in more places in my abs (front and sides)using my ab board. Could be I am just more out of shape but I hadn't done any ab work in years back then either. I did 60 regular crunches and 20 side crunches yesterday and am only mildly sore but I took Tylenol and Advil (Doctor approved) before bed for my socket pain so that could be helping. I am hoping to crank it up to 100 a day.
