Caffine

Does caffine make you retain fluid? I don't drink a lot of regular coffee, mainly decaf. I was just wondering because if I have a diet coke I seem to feel very puffy?? :?: :?:

Its not the caffeine... its the sodium... ;)
Caffeine is simply a stimulant. It increases the heart rate and opens up blood vessels. It doesn't cause you to retain fluid, in fact, it makes you want to expel it.
Given that its a stimulant, it also stimulates the feeling for food, as well as acid production. This is why its limited for us, makes us want food and also can cause problems with our stomachs as we have less food there with more acid.

I would say if you are feeling puffy, and can attribute it to the diet soda, its most likely the sodium (eventhough most are fairly low in sodium these days). If you eat salty foods with your L&G and aren't washing it out, that might be it. It may also be something totally unrelated.

So....Mr. Mac, the Science Hack  (ala Bill Nye the Science Guy) ...
Thanks so much for this info! I've been feeling a tad guilty about how much coffee I drink on some days, but I won't any longer. I understand what you're saying, but if it neither causes me to be hungry (in fact, it seems to have the opposite effect) nor results in stomach probs, do you think it's okay to disregard the suggested limits? I mean, are these the only reasons for them? I was also under the impression that caffeine could cause fluid retention, though I have not experienced that myself, and now you've also debunked that myth.

C'mon this old lady needs all the help she can get just getting through the day at school, not to mention the late-night reading/paper-writing/study sessions that are required!

( ;) Sorry, Mike, but the only other rhyme for Mac that I could come up with was Quack...and that just seemed wrong!)

Old huh? I think not.

I'd say the other consideration would be the amount of half & half or creamer a person uses.

Awww, thanks Brian, you're a sweetie! <img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_4_109.gif" alt="SmileyCentral.com" border="0"><img border="0" src="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fimgfarm%252Ecom%252Fimages%252Fnocache%252Ftr%252Ffw%252Fsmiley%252Fsocial%252Egif%253Fi%253D4%252F4_4_109/image.gif">

Speaking of sweet...or NOT sweet, as is the case here...
I take my coffee black, so calories, fat, and carbs are non-issues
--- it's strictly a question of caffeine.

First, follow the limits, they are there for a reason. Second, follow the limits, they are there for a reason. Third, follow the limits, they are there for a reason. ;)
Oh yeah, and be aware of creamer, etc like Brian said. I'm no doctor, never claimed to be. Not a nutritionist either. I just go by what I know and the experience I have with the program.

Hope this helps clear things up.

No, Michael, it does NOT.
I wanted you to say, "Sure, Sojo ~ you can have

Jeez, was that really too much to ask for??

I believe the Quick Start Guide suggested a limit on caffeine consumption because while on MF your body is more susceptible to the bad side effects: irritabillity, nervousness, sleep problems, etc.

Also, caffeine is a mild diuretic, so shouldn't cause any swelling. It is also possible to od on caffeine and it has been called the poor man's amphetamine.

If you are looking for a diet soda without caffeine or sodium, try Diet Rite or Diet RC.

Well, sorry. As my lovely wife will attest to... I don't read minds.... even hers :?
I guess you'll just have to do your best and just not tell anybody :idontknow: :couch:

BTW... since you are fairly local (as in nearby, not less than the normal number of calories), are you coming to our little get together with Terry and Nancy on the 30th and/or the 31st?
See the post here: http://www.makemethinner.com/forum/diet-10663.html

Would love to see ya and we (Terry, Nancy, Mike, Di, etc) will do our best to answer any questions (regarding the program ;) ) that you have.

Sojo,

Coffee never bothered me and I love it and it doesn't have calories and carbs. I drank and still do drink it liberally. Black of course. I never considered it a cheat either. I guess technically you could say it was, but there's only so far a girl can go to get purty and skinny. Luv my coffee, luv my coffee, luv my coffee and won't give it up. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble who thinks I'm perfect, hehe.
