Bunny deterrent?

Postby DogMa » May 15th, 2007, 7:33 am

As a few of you know, I'm having a bit of a problem with rabbits entering my yard. Or maybe the problem is theirs, because they can't seem to get out alive if my dog sees them.

So a search online turns up a lot of products with fox urine (usually granules or powder, I think) that you're supposed to sprinkle around to deter them. Does anyone know whether this actually works? And if it doesn't, does anyone what DOES work? I wouild not be unhappy to live the rest of my life without having to scoop up another dead bunny.

I hear ya. We used to have bunnies as pets until we got the dog... who of course, being the hunter, hunted them.

The best products that I have noted are those that have the scent of rabbit predators.... namely foxes and canines.

Good luck.

I grew up on a mostly wooded 6 acre lot.. and we had a ton of problems with bunnies and deer getting into the garden.. Dad built a fence that the bunnies just dug holes under.. and the deer would actually manage to either shimmy under or jump over!

He finally tried some stuff the feed&seed guy recommended, and it had fox, coyote and wolf pee in it.. he just spread it all around the outside of the fence and then in between the raised plots inside the garden as well.. it worked really well for like 3 weeks, then had to be redone - if it rained alot, it had to be done more often than that.

Our neighbor would have his sons pee around his garden plot.. but that is a little too disgusting I think.

Hmmm, guess I'll try the fox stuff, then. Dog pee clearly doesn't work, since it's already all over my yard, thanks to my two "kids."

Guess I have a new project this weekend. I just hope we don't have any more deaths before then. Sigh.

Yeah, the urine should work. I posted this in your journal - bunnies don't like marigolds. I planted them around my garden and the bunnies stayed out.

Unca,

That was just so wrong on so many levels..... :hammerhead:

I had to learn how to appreciate how cute and cuddly bunnies can be (I raised them as a kid for meat  )

When I met Di, she had a pet bunny, in the house, in a cage, and it was potty trained... so, I learned to see bunnies as the cute things they are.... :idontknow:

Umm, I don't think you want these by the time I find them. Plus ... eyew.

And a shortage of rabbits? Given their habits, how is that even possible??

In any case, I'm happy to report she hasn't killed anything in over 24 hours. But I'm going to get the fox stuff to try. (Marigolds would be great, but with almost half an acre of fenced yard, that's a LOT of planting. And between my black thumb and my allergy to bees and fire ants, I think the fox pee is my best bet.)

Rabbit shortage? Theres an abundance of jackrabbits in the back of my office at work. Tons of them to the tune of 3 or 4 in our small yard at a time and more in the next lot.

The rabbits are farm raised. And with the price of corn going up. Farmers who make corn sell it the goverment for ethenol they are making a better profit, then selling it to farmers who raise cattle/chicken ect. So farmers who raise the rabbits decided it was getting way to expensive. So they decided to limit the amount they are raising.

Wait until The summer prices on all meats and dairy is going to go up.
