BMR and calorie deficit question

Postby tlp1203 » January 14th, 2007, 1:28 pm

Hi All-
I have a question..
Ok, I looked up online what my BMR is at is said it is around 1500 calories a day I burn just to survive. So I figured I Medifast provided me with a calorie deficit of 700-800 a day.. considering it takes 3500 calories burned to lose a pound, it would take me 5 days to lose a pound, so, how can MF say "lose 2-5 pounds a week"?

Did I calculate wrong?

This is the formula I've used to calculate calories to maintain.....

Your current weight x 10 equals calories needed to maintain

or if you are active X 12

Are you 150 lbs right now?

I know that doesn't answer your question though....I'm assuming that the 2-5 lbs information is based on higher starting weights??? Not sure.

Actually, if I understand the process correctly (which I might not have it all correct) using your Basal Metabolic Rate isn't the right thing to do with medifast.
The process that our bodies use when we are following the 5 and 1 plan on medifast is ketosis. Since using the 5 medifast meal replacements gives our bodies the prefectly formulated balance of nutrition (protein, carbs, fat and other nutrients), our bodies enter a light state of ketosis (fat burning state). Once our bodies are in this state AND we are getting the perfect balance of nutritious foods, at 900-1100 calories a day, we burn fat. Its not so much just the fact that we are taking in fewer calories, but we are taking in the right kind of calories that allows our bodies to burn just fat.
Also, drinking lots of water helps to cleanse our bodies of the by products of this process (and the junk leftover from the shrinking fat cells).

I hope that I got this right, if not, hopefully someone can correct it. I do know that we can't just go with the BMR as a reason for our weight loss.

I have to be careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God's business.

oookkk .. Thanks! I was able to find mymedifast.com and it tracks calories eaten and you can log meals and exercise too! It's pretty cool! I refuse to "snack" even on celery or pickles.. (it's a struggle for me to eat every 2-3 hours as it is!) so I am right at or just under 800 calories a day, have lost 2.5 # since last Thursday.. of course, the scale can do weird things so it could be back to what it was when I started on my Friday weigh in!
I LOVE THE CAPPUCCINO!!!
