Benefit of Massage?

I am wondering if Massage Therapy would be a benefit during the MF weight loss process. Anyone know :?:

I have never had massage therapy, but I would think to be a benefit during any kind of life-process :-P. hee hee. But, I assume you mean specifically for skin ? I don't know. I just posted to have an excuse to say something clever :mrgreen:

Actually, I was thinking about massage not just for skin, but also for muscle and circulation. Since we are drinking water to help detox from the reduction of fat stores I was thinking massage would contribute to the process ...

... and it feels gooood too ;)

We get massage each visit to the chiroprator. Its great... and highly recommended. Not for weight loss anything, just feels better. :mrgreen:

I am a big believer in massage, and my son is halfway thru his massage therapy school program.

Massage can help relieve stress - which causes a lot of us to over eat. It also improves circulation, helps rid the muscles of toxins, helps the flow of lymphatic fluid through the tissues.

In addition, the use of herbal products can intensify all of these benefits.

So - go get a massage, or 2 or 3, . . . . . .

You're not spoiling yourself, you're caring for yourself - it's OK :thumbup:

Hello Mary,
I am a Licensed Massage Therapist, maybe I can help with an answer. While massage will not specifically help with weight loss, you are correct that it will improve (temporarily) your circulation and help to remove toxins from muscles. One of the most important benefits of massage, in my opinion, is the release of endorphins. Endorphins are essentially "feel good" chemicals made by the body. Anything that triggers endorphins can't be a bad thing, I think. Endorphins will affect how stressors are dealt with, among other things. I think, too, that as we lose weight, massage can be a good tool for getting back in touch with our bodies. It can be a tool of acceptance, of learning to enjoy physical contact that we may have shrunk away from in our former (fat) state.
From a massage therapist, you will always hear "yes, get a massage"..., so, go get a massage (preferably every two weeks)

Thanks, Amber! Didn't know we had a massage therapist in our midst! What a great forum :)

You know, I never even considered the effect of releasing endorphins and that is such a positive aspect of massage! I'm all for anything that makes me feel good--in a healthy way, that is! :D

I will say this, for a small period during my weight loss journey I had severe back pain in the shoulder blade area. I attributed it to my body shifting with the less weight. Anyhow, my massage therapist was able to work the pain out every 2 weeks as I suffered through this period. The pain would be gone for about a week to a week and a half each time she took care of it.

Get one. You will not regret it.

Hmmmm, I've never been to Hamilton... maybe I sould pack the table in the back of my 4Runner and take a little road trip~ :lol:
Why Hamilton? I hear it's really pretty but I'm thinking there's not a lot there.

I get a massage each month and it really helps me -- I spend a lot of time on the computer and hunched over a microscope/ lab bench so my shoulders and lower back really take a beating.

And a good massage really does get toxins out of the muscles; I severely injured my leg a few years ago and it swelled up from ankle to above the knee by the end of every day. My massage therapist gave me a gentle massage and whatever she did, all those poisons coming out of the leg made me feel completely sick and hungover the next day. But it hasn't swelled since!

I had a massage two days after my 3-week vacation in Spain. I spent those 3 weeks with swollen legs because of the airplane and all the touring. The massage did wonders for my circulation--the edema went away although it seemed I spent most of the night in the bathroom!

A massage is definitely a good way to feel better. I guess you really don't need a "reason" to get a massage--other than to be good to your self.
