Bars VS. Diabetic Bars

Postby Prancer » July 23rd, 2006, 2:52 pm

I am getting ready to do my next order next week. I like to have a bar a day and it really helps that it is so quick and easy when I am on the go. Anyway is there any real advantage to ordering the diabetic ones? I compared the nutricional info and they dont seem that much better then the regular ones.

I remember reading some of you use the diabetic ones...any input?

I don't need the diabetic bars, but I have found that (being a peanut butteraholic), I prefer the diabetic peanut butter to the regular (which to me doesn't taste much different from the caramel nut - which I don't prefer).
Ultimately, the diabetic bars are lower in sugar (not necessarily carbs). I think they use sugar alcohols (without one in front of me I don't recall) which are digested way slower then regular sugar, thus, it doesn't affect your insulin much. They do get digested though, so you don't discount their caloric value.
Only thing you can really discount is fiber.

Thanks Mike. Is the fiber higher in the regular ones?

Kind of funny too that I prefer the PB bars so if the diabetic ones are even better you may have just sold me on them.

I'm with Mike. I actually don't eat ANY of the bars anymore, but when I did, I preferred the diabetic pb ones to the regular. More real peanut butter taste, in my opinion.

(And I dunno, if you eat enough sugar alcohols, you can discount pretty much ALL the calories. Ahem. I actually reach for sugar alcohols sometimes when I'm having a sandbox problem.)

The regular peanut butter bars have been reformulated and now have lots and lots of PB flavour.....just FYI. :D

I looked this up: Sugar alcohols do have carb calories, and the body will use these as fuel, or store as fat, whether or not insulin is involved. You need to look at the total CALORIES for one serving of the product.

So, it doesn't matter how many you eat, you still count the calories.

My point is the effect sugar alcohols have. Maltitol, for instance, is the main ingredient in baby laxatives. If you eat enough in a short period, those calories aren't around long enough to have an effect.

I got what you meant Robin...when I looked up sugar alcohols online it said a side effect could be the runs.

I used to tell people I consume sugar alcohols for medicinal purposes only. (I know, TMI. But if you're having a real problem, it's a tasty way to fix it.)

Sorry for the slow uptake Robin. I read that to Di after I posted my previous response and she explained what catbox meant. I feel so out of things sometimes.
Yeah, when I have too much of certain polyols I feel the "laxative effect" as the label says.
