Awesome Pickles

Postby Sylvia » January 9th, 2005, 8:11 pm

I found something by accident that I thought might benefit folks just starting the program and dying for something to munch. As you know (or will soon) a dill pickle is one of the very few non-program munchies you can have.

A few days ago I was at the grocery store and at the last minute remembered that I needed to buy pickles. I grabbed a bottle of dill pickle spears, threw then in the cart and checked out.

When I got home I made lunch and put a couple of the spears on my plate, I took a bite and WOW - an explosion of flavor in my mouth - these pickles were SPICY. I looked at the bottle and it turns out that these were jalapeno spears which I have never heard of - same calorie count and everything as regular pickles, but they apparantly add some peppers to the brine. They should be completely legal, I would think.

They are very satisfying and even thought the spears are pretty small, a couple goes a long way.

Mmmmm! Those sound terrific! I used to love eating jalapeno slices on cheddar cheese wedges, so these new pickles might be a great way to relive the moment without cheating!

Do you know the brand name?

Mt. Olive ... great place familiar to us Tarheels!
On New Years Eve, guess what they drop instead of a lighted ball or acorn? That's right ... A PICKLE!!
Sasa & I tried to find it on TV but couldn't. Guess we should have spent New Years Eve in Mt. Olive.

My, you got my attention with this post - I love hot stuff!

I make my own hot dills and use 4-5 little red chili peppers per quart. Hotsy Totsy!

I'll be on the lookout for the Mt. Olive Pickles. Weird, I taught and served as Curriculum Director at Mt. Olive School for Dyslexic Children!

All right, I'll ask the dumb question. Why did they name the pickle capital of the world "Mt. Olive"? Why not "Mt. Pickle"?

Maybe they started small, with olives, and then perfected the recipe with pickles... But by then it was too late to change the name...? ;)

That's a good question. I think the town was named first - there is also a college there named Mt. Olive. Probably from Old Testament.

There is also a turkey packing plant there - so I guess we are lucky it's not Mt. Turkey.

Mombarnes, Mt. Turkey :turkey: , that made me laugh out loud for the first time today (I did my taxes today) :burnout:

I went "shopping" today, lamenting the fact that I couldn't buy any peaches, which smelled heavenly, but I have loftier goals now.

I detest dill pickles so when I read about Mt. Olive on this thread, I hurriedly went the the pickles aisle (which inexplicably is close to the peanut butter  and found my beloved Sweet Gherkins with Splenda, no calories, no carbs, WOOHOO! I think I read somewhere that we can have two, right Nancy? Two is about my limit for pickles anyway, but they sure are gonna taste good when I'm craving something a little sweet and crunchy. I also bought celery. But those pickles sure did make my day

Jen ~

Yup, you may have two (Since gherkins are on the puny side, pickly speaking, that is, use your good sense to know how many 'two' gherkins would be in dill terms. Confused? Good...)

Jen, celery with mustard squirted down the middle isn't bad. Compared to having a squirt of PB down the middle, it may leave something to be desired but next to nothing, celery and mustard is a GOOD THING! ;)

Celery with mustard, YUM!!! I love mustard and prefer it on everything over ketchup, catsup, cat soup, whatever you call it. I never though of that Nancy. I will definitely give that a try. Thanks!

You are welcome!

Some times ya gotta be really creative - if it keeps ya from eating  forbidden  food, it's worth it.

Sometimes when I am really cwazy for somethin' and I am at my food limit for the day, I put in my night guard so I have something in my mouth to bite on! I have been known to wear my 'night guard' at 3 PM. :roflmao:

Some days I need a "kitchen guard!"
