Anyone else having trouble with beef? Is this normal?

Postby Lulie » June 26th, 2006, 1:50 pm

Ok,

I have never had anything like this happen to me and I cannot figure out what is going on. We butchered our own cow in April, and that is when I started Medifast. I have been eating off this cow for my L&G since then. As well as my family. Never had any trouble until this week. I ate a taco salad with lean burger one day, and that is when the trouble began. My stomach started cramping severely within a short period of time and I had diarrhea the rest of the evening with severe cramps the rest of evening too. My taco meat was prepared the same as I always have prepared it since MF.

I figured it has to be the beef or the lettuce. So the next night I eat a salad with the same head of lettuce and some chicken. NO problems. NO tummy ache, nothing.

So, last night I decided to try the beef again. I used a new pack and grilled burgers on the grill with part, and made hot dog sauce for my dd with the rest. Needless to say, I was cramping within less than 2 hrs after eating my burger. The cramping/diarrhea was worse than it was 2 days before. My stomach was still hurting some when I went to bed, but pretty much fine today. My dd did not get sick with her meat from the same package. I cannot figure this out at all. The meat was prepared 2 different ways, and I still get sick. Is this something related to Medifast? I have been on it since April, so I wondered it this was some sort of "long-term" affect or something.

Anyone else experiencing this? I will croak if I cannot have beef with my L&G, of course I will croak if I keep feeling like this after eating beef, too! LOL

Any ideas or suggestions?

Can't say as I have had any cramping from beef. I know the 2 times that I went of plan and ate too much at a restaurant. I was headed for a toilet within 30 minutes of leaving the restaurant.

But over all I now rarely eat beef...chicken and seafood have been the staples in my L&G.

Sorry for probably being absolutely no help

Yeah, no help here, either. I eat beef probably twice a week, but I've never had a problem with it.

I have recently started having trouble only when I eat hamburger. I bought some the other day that say it's 92% lean but I think it lied and is 83% (It looks and feels like it has a lot of fat). I got wicked cramps and stuff from it, and I'm going to have to feed the rest to my bf who doesn't have such trouble.

I'm ok with steaks still, but I think that's because it's a lot easier to tell if the cut is lean enough.

It sounds like you should see a Dr.

My two cents. :D

No possibility the meat was bad? I know nothing about killing my own cow so that's why I ask. Seems like it was the meat or something the meat was treated with

OK, I went back and read better. Maybe you got a bad piece (twice?) and they didn't..maybe your stomach just can't handle the excess fat and heavy food anymore. If you drink lots of water and flushed your insides out, maybe that is just a reaction to the fat in the meat. Stick with chicken! :-P

Thanks everyone.

I still can't figure it out. I have been avoiding beef though.

I don't believe the meat was bad. If it was, it looks like my dd would have gotten sick too.

If I can get the courage up, I am gonna try steak tomorrow. I will let you all know how it goes.

Thanks again.

Not necessarily. Everyone's immune system is different and it is possible that you would react and another person would not. I would try some beef from another source and see what happens.

Thanks for the responses.

Arklahoma, I was thinking of pm'ing you about this. I tried steak last night and it was more severe than the other 2x's. Plus I had some nausea too. No one else got sick but me. I was starting to cramp within 1hr and diarrhea and severe cramping within 1 1/2 hrs after eating the meat. So, tonight I decided to try chicken. Believe me, I was praying I would not have to go through that again. I was in bed for hours last night with those cramps/diarrhea. LOL

Anyway, the chicken was fine. I am wondering if this is some kind of bowel thing? My body is not processing the extra fat from the beef maybe? I have never had any problems before, so I am wondering if it has something to do with the MF diet or what? I would greatly appreciate your opinion. I am gonna avoid beef for a while though. Whew! I don't want to go that route again for a while. LOL

TIA

Your symptoms are suggestive of E. Coli contamination. Was this beef from the same cow or from the grocer's?
