Any experience with Gout???

Postby tammyc » April 23rd, 2006, 9:36 pm

Hi everyone! My dad is interested in Medifast and he has a history of gout when doing a low carb and high protein type diet. I was wondering if anyone here would know if there is any problems with Medifast and Gout. I havent seen any posts, so I figured it wasnt a big problem. I plan to call the nurse line tomorrow.

I haven't heard anything, but it's a good idea to call. This isn't really a low-carb plan; it's REDUCED carb, but not very low at all if you've ever been on Atkins. It's also not very high in purines (found in meat, poultry, eggs and nuts), which is supposed to be one of the problems with low-carb diets. Most of our protein is from soy or whey, except for the lean and green meal.

Hi, Tammy ~

We have several clients that used to suffer regularly from gout and they are goutless on our program. In fact, one person had a return engagement of his gout when he was on vacation and failed to have a couple of shakes each day. To get it back under control, he drank five shakes a day for four or five days, the painful episode subsided by day three and he now uses two shakes a day for maintenance.

Robin explained the basis of our program very well. Medifast is a nutritionally balanced plan and includes the necessary carbohydrates to maintain good bodily functioning while the body releases the fat stores. Let us know how your Dad gets along.

I have had gout once (and it was the most painful thing I've ever experienced). I haven't had any problems since starting the plan.

It is. At first you just think that your foot is bruised, but by the end of the second day you cannot walk and the slightest touch results in excrutiating pain. My grandmother had it once and claimed that it was more painful that childbirth.

The really bad part is that the doctor gave me medicine that healed the problem in less than three hours. If I would have just went to the doctor a little sooner I could have avoided the pain.

Just to update this thread, I now have a new case of gout. I don't know if Medifast is to blame (I doubt it).

I'm so sorry, Manly. I hope this time you saw the doc sooner, so you'll be feeling better quickly.

I couldn't get an appointment until tommorow, but the pain isn't as bad this time. It still hurts, but I can live with it.

The attack wasn't nearly as bad this time, but I did get to the doctor before it got any worse. The bad news is that they told me that once you get it for the second time, you'll probably have it for life.

He said that my weight could be a factor in it, so it's possible that if that is the culprit, I will stock having it...but he said that most likely it's hereditary.

Oh well, life goes on. As long as I have the medicine, I'm not terribly concerned about it.
