Another restaurant question.....

Postby Finally_Losing » July 17th, 2006, 9:29 am

When you go to a restaurant, how do you gauge portions if the weight isn't listed on the menu? For instance, Chinese, you can get the steamed chicken and veggies which is yummy. But then the plate comes out and it seems like an awful lot.... I don't eat the carrots or little corn, just the broccoli, celery, and mushrooms (and chicken of course). I'm pretty sure the chicken portion is sufficient to meet the required amount, I'm just a little iffy on the veggies. Am I eating too many? Does anyone have a little trick they use at restaurants?

Thanks,
Amy

I just eyeball it. But with experience, you can come pretty close.

Ah, experience is the key lol....Don't quite have that yet. Without a measuring cup and scale, I'm lost!

Well, let's see. 5 oz. of beef is about the size of your palm give or take. 7 oz. of poultry/fish would be about the size of your hand unless it's thick, but start there.

A cup is about the size of your fist or a bit more, so a 1 1/2 cups is about the size of 1 1/2 of your fists.
