And what's the lesson I learned today boys and girls?

Postby ljm498 » May 13th, 2005, 11:23 am

I could absolutely kick myself! :x And I know better too! So, for the past few days I've been eating ground turkey seasoned with garlic powder and chili powder over salad for my lean and green. And have been enjoying it very much might I add. And I've been doing this a few days a week for the past 2 weeks or so. Coincidentaly my weight loss has slowed down a bit. I'm thinking it's just my body readjusting or whatever so I didn't really give it too much thought. WELL! I actually read the nutritional information on the back of the package of ground turkey and it has 17 freakin grams of fat per 4oz serving!!!!!! Holy turkeys! And I've been eating between 5 and 7oz thinking I'm getting a really lean meat! Arggghhhhhhh!!!! :x I know, I'm supposed to ALWAYS read the label. But, I had no idea there would be a lot of fat in TURKEY! Well, lesson learned! That's for sure! Thankfully, I have been able to lose SOME but not like I was before I started eating the turkey. Does anyone know if it's like ground beef where they have the different levels of fat content? Or is turkey just a fat bird?

So, everyone, READ THE LABEL!

Ok, I'm done venting, thanks for listening!!! :)

You definetly need to read the label.. Ground turkey has mostly dark meat in it and skin not the breast meat, therefore the fat content is much higher. Turkey breast is much lower in fat. But 17 grams of FAT that is horrible :x :x . But do look for turkey brest I found some can turkey is like 95% FF.

Good Luck and read those labels :D

No, turkey meat is very good and lo-fat -- don't know why what ljm is using is so fatty. If it's ground turkey, it might be that they included the skin in it or something like that. Plus she says that it is "seasoned," so who knows what all they included -- some sugar-based thing or something?

I learned this lesson a few weeks ago and should have posted about it but thought everyone knew it but me. I usually eat deli turkey meat which brags about how lowfat it is in the ad on Peapod. I bought some ground turkey thinking it was also lean and made a patty on my George Foreman. I grew nauseous watching it cook on the grill. Fat just poured off it into the little basin at the front. I gave it to my sweet German Shepherd, Diesel.

Ahhhh, so turkey breast is what I want it sounds like. Good to know.

Actually, I seasoned it myself so thankfully I didn't have any additional stuff to deal with. The fat was enough! :D
I had no idea that ground turkey was the dark meat with the skin in it. No wonder!

Well, hopefully now that I've been enlightened the weight loss will pick up again at least a little bit. Glad I didn't go on doing this for weeks!

Ground turkey

Postby Jan » May 13th, 2005, 1:50 pm

The poultry industry has really deceived us :x Sneaking all that fat and skin into an otherwise good meat-- The poor beef industry is trying to let us know that many cuts of beef are leaner than poultry -- but we sometimes don't listen   -- for example chicken thighs and lega have lots of fat too and lean beef is a better choice-- many meat markets have fat content lists which give the type of meat and the exact fat -- some things arer eaLLY SURPRISING The forum is a great well to help us figure these thing out :D (P.S. I'm not a beef rancher but my daughter did raise a steer -- does that count :-P ??

ljm498,

Thanks for the reminder: Read the label!
There's Ground Turkey and Ground Turkey Breast.
Ground Turkey Breast is usually okay -- depends upon the brand.
And, I quess, like ground beef, draining the pan of excess fat should always be considered.

This is very true! I use my handy dandy George Forman grill or propane grill for any type of meat I cook. For one, it's quick. For two, it's quick. And for three, it's quick! . Oh yeah, it gets rid of the excess fat too, which is mucho healthy.
