About the meal with the 5/1

Postby mtomto » March 5th, 2006, 11:00 am

Hi all. I just started and am enthusiastic about this. I'll be around for support and to share the same. By the way I am a male/45.

My nurse explained the program and in discussing the L&G meal, she said for sure I could have a little more than 5-6 oz. of protein, and more vegetables as I saw fit. I should have questioned her I guess, but later concluded that as a man I should see serious results and a few more good calories daily might be a safer overall.

Do you feel it neccesary to measure everything out to an oz. or just eyeball it?

[The general guide is that you can have 5oz of lean beef, pork, or lamb or you can have 7oz seafood, chicken, or turkey this is a lot more than you think and I would recommend weighing it. You can have 2C salad greens and 1/4C raw veggies on it (from the approved list of course) or 1.5C cooked veggies from the approved list.

Hey there!

Maybe your Dr's office has modified the Medifast plan according to their own ideas.??

In the welcome section of the quickstart guide they say this:

Why Medifast Works

"Medifast Meals are low calorie, low fat, and nutritonally balanced. There is no counting calories, carbs, or points. Medifast does it all for you. The Medifast 5 & 1 Plan was carefully designed to give you the right amount of food to keep you satisfied while you lose weight. Within a few days of starting the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan, your body will enter a mild fat-burning state of "ketosis." Not only does this fat-burning state help the body achieve rapid weight loss while preserving muscle tissue, but it also helps eliminate physical hunger while providing you with plenty of energy."

The whole concept is to have a precise balance of carbs and proteins so measuring is important.

As Lisa said, You will be surprised at how much meat 5-7 oz actually is. Before I got my food scale I was most definatly "cheating" myself cause I can't eyeball for size worth anything. lol

You will do great!
Hugs,
Gina

I'd go with what they said. But I'd still weigh things out, at least until you're used to things and know what 5 ounces (or 6 or whatever they said) looks like. Otherwise it's too easy for it to creep up from 6 ounces to 8 ounces to 10 ounces to ...

Thanks. I'll measure and all. I just don't think a little more than two cups of vegs can hurt. Besides, how many broccilli can you really cram into one of those cup measures !

True. I always weigh my protein, but I frequently eyeball the veggies. I have a pretty good idea of what a Medifast serving of veggies looks like by now.

As for the doc's office modifying the plan, that happens. No diet is one size fits all; some people, such as people with physical jobs, require more protein - and more calories - than others. As Nancy and the other HAs always say, we're not doctors, and we're certainly not YOUR doctor.
