3rd Week Over and OPRAH yesterday!

Postby MARIE » July 25th, 2006, 3:42 pm

Hi !

Today was weigh-in day for the end of my 3rd week. All told, I have lost a total of 15 lbs.! I so appreciate your encouragement to these updates--it means alot! :D

Even though the scale moved downward again, it wasn't as much as the first 2 weeks and I KNOW that is totally normal and I expected it; it was still just a little tough--makes me realize again how far I have to go; and I felt a little low. :?

The other thing is...did anyone see Oprah yesterday? It was on nutrition, exercise, (she had Bob Greene on, her trainer--you know that guy!), and some of her favorite snacks, etc. They had some folks who had been doing her "Boot Camp" for 12 weeks and it's always inspiring to see anyone who works at it and loses weight! Bob Greene said something very interesting--he recommends that when you are start to lose weight (eating less and moving more); you should not weigh yourself for 2 months! He said, and it made sense, that the water in your body is readjusting itself; that when you have too much weight and first start losing it, your body has been dehydrated--when you start losing and doing all the right healthy things, your body actually needs and retains more water to function properly. He was just saying that the scale goes up and down alot, so don't weigh for awhile. Oprah said she couldn't wait 2 months! The main thing they were saying was, don't weigh too often.

What do you think? I thought maybe now I'd start weighing every other week, because I can get discouraged and too focused on the numbers.

I think that last sentence says it all. If you get discouraged and too focused on the numbers, you probably should weigh less often.

But for me, my biggest motivation at the beginning was seeing the numbers on the scale change, when they hadn't on so many other plans. I NEEDED to weigh frequently.

CONGRATS on your awesome weight loss!! :D

For 4 years I weighed myself DAILY!! I was a slave to the scale.

It was good for me most days, as I'd get more motivated when I saw I lost a bit or at least maintained, and I didn't get too discouraged about small gains, BUT there were those days where just a small gain would totally disrupt me and I'd backtrack even more.

Now, I try to weigh myself once a week; I'd like to space it out to every 2 weeks....but coming off a daily weighing addiciton - I guess weekly is good for now! LOL There is NO WAY I could go 2 months!! - I think weekly/every-other-week is a good idea.

I caught part of Oprah yesterday when they were showing the snacks. I had wanted to watch more of it but we were running around. I am the same as you the scale can discourage me. I weigh myself about 3x a day right now and that isnt normal. I go up and down mood wise because of it. I think I need to get dh to hide it.

Marie,

DH-Dear Husband

NSV-Non scale victory...something good that happens on MF that isn't scale related like a compliment about how you look or good blood work or getting into a pair of pants you couldn't before. That kind of thing.

I used to weigh SEVERAL times a day. For a while I was weighing every time I peed, I was crazy! I was letting it affect my mood and my motivation...I am now on once a week, because I KNOW that I'm doing the right thing and I can't depend on the scale to PUT me in a good mood.

Didn't watch Oprah.

I am on strike against the scale. I did get weighed at the doc last week, but have not weighed since. I know I am losing inches, though, if not more pounds. I just keep on keepin on. I will weigh again, some day, but just not any day soon. Where is my scale?? It is at the top of the mineral elevator at my husband's work. I am NOT going to climb up there and get it, and I am NOT going to go buy another one. I have had to buy three since starting this plan, what with my kids trying to see how much a tub full of water weighs and the like..... Just hang in there and do what works for you.

I weigh every day, but I don't worry about the fluctuations. If they drove me crazy, I think I'd find a way to stop. I weigh every day because my history has been to avoid the scale.....I'm facing it daily as I've had to face my fat head on.

Congrats on your weight loss Marie!!! That is awesome!!!!

I, too, am a slave to the scale but not obsessed. If I gain a day and know I have been compliant, I'm not worried - I know the program works.

Good luck!

Exactly. It's all in your attitude. I weigh as entertainment, many times a day. But I fluctuate like CRAZY, and if I only weighed once a week, I just know it would just happen to be at a time when I was inexplicably up 3 pounds. And then I'd be depressed, instead of knowing that I was 3 pounds lower the day before, so there was no way I'd gained 3 pounds of fat.

But for those who can't handle the fluctuations and the slow periods, it's better to just stay off the scale.

Nothing too revolutionary or odd :nana: ; and these snacks would be when you are done with the shakes and onto real food---one snack that looked yummy was thin apple slices with very thin slices of parmesan cheese (from a block, so they were larger slices...) put the cheese on an apple slice and eat; she also had a few nuts with that snack.

At night when you are hungry, she recommened a handful of grapenuts with a handful of mini shredded-wheat, with a few berries on top, (splenda if you want), with milk on top. Kind of a fancy bowl of cereal but think of it like an ice cream sundae!

Another was a cup of hot green (or whatever you like) tea at nite with an orange wedge...and just enjoy that. Also, jello/fruit made into a parfait with a little whipped cream and sprinkled with grapenuts/whatever healthy crunchy thing you like.

She also talked about, and I already do this and maybe many of you do, too--to use plates, bowls, glasses, whatever; that you really like, to make it feel special. I use crystal goblets to drink out of and pretty plates to have a snack on, or a special teacup. Seems to make it more of a planned eating time, which is good for me as so much of my poor eating would happen on the run or in the car, etc.

SO-just some tips--we probably all know this stuff, but when you are in a good place with eating (medi-fasting); these tips seem more appealing, don't they? HA!

Hmmm. My maintenance snacks will generally include protein. So I think some of those wouldn't work for me. I'm guessing their focus was more low-fat than any sort of carb restrictions.
