Nancy and I enjoyed day 2 of our training trip in Decorah & Waukon, Iowa. Nancy got up early and was going to take a 5k walk in the country (in preparation for the event we’ve both entered for tomorrow morning) while I was catching up on some biz before the day really got started. I was then going to pick her up on the country highway we had agreed upon for her to walk and then we were going to make the 25 minute drive to Decorah together to enjoy the Nordic Fest festivities. Of course, she took a wrong turn almost right out of the driveway and ended up on a totally different country road than where I expected her to be traveling on. I amusingly thought to myself that I may have to call the fire department or 911 to get some assistance. Or maybe call in Sparky, their trusty and faithful rescuer.
To make a short ‘post’ even shorter, thank goodness for cell phones. I didn’t arrive to pick her up and the weather was turning ugly and the only companions she came across were cows and horses. She tried using her cell phone but you know how they work out in the country, especially T-Moble when you’re in a zone not covered. Fortunately, even though she couldn’t hear me, I could here her, turned in the opposite direction from where she was suppose to go and found her walking along the country road. With the weather turning nasty, she was getting ready to jump into the ditch alongside the road to avoid the lightening strikes. Thank the Lord I found her before she buried herself in the ditch or I would have never discovered her. An exciting start to day 2 of our Decorah, Waukon Iowa, journey.
The theme of the 2009 Nordic Fest is “Northern deLights” which features the arts, crafts and traditions of the Sami, the native inhabitants of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Russian Kola Peninsula. There are approximately 80,000 Sami people in northern Europe and at least 30,000 persons in North America who have Sami ancestors. The Nordic Fest is attended by many visitors from these countries, many of them for the first time.
